Chapter 2: Doubt
Chapter
2:
Doubt
By:
weasel
What
have
I
gotten
myself
into?
Within
seconds
of
agreeing
to
his
plan,
he
grabs
two
bags
of
supplies
and
two
Identification
cards.
"This
is
what
we
need
to
get
into
the
adventurers
guild.
These
two
are
already
dead
members
so
we’ll
have
no
problem
impersonating
them.
Once
we
get
there
it
won't
matter,
but
until
then
try
your
best
to
not
ruin
my
plan,
okay?”
He
says
in
a
surprisingly
playful
tone.
I
met
that
speech
with
nothing
but
silence.
He
stands
there.
“Alright
let's
go."
"Hold
on,
we're
leaving
already?"
Orpheus
scoffs
at
my
comment.
"Yes,
we
need
to
hurry,
the
Adventurers
guild
sends
troops
every
Saturday.
This
is
our
best
chance."
Every
Saturday?
I
knew
the
war
at
Castle
Drayton
had
been
raging
on,
but
to
request
for
troops
every
week?
for
2
years?
I
don't
think
his
father
is
going
to
be
alive…
"Alright
then,
come
on."
I
say
to
try
and
give
myself
some
confidence.
It's
strange,
right
now
is
one
of
the
few
times
I'm
ever
afraid
of
something.
This
situation...
It's
different,
More
confusing.
"With
it
being
Friday,
we
should
have
just
enough
time
to
prepare.
Don’t
worry,
time
will
go
by
very
quickly,
I
assure
you."
We
quickly
left
his
house
and
traveled
to
the
nearest
station
for
the
Adventurers
guild.
"Don't
freak
out."
Orpheus
whispers
to
me.
"Just
show
them
your
Identification
card
and
the
receptionist
will
let
you
right
through."
He
demonstrates
this
to
me
and
as
he's
walking
in,
he
turns
and
gives
me
a
wink.
It's
my
turn
now.
"Hello,
good
morning."
I
say
to
the
receptionist.
I
hand
her
my
card
and
she
gives
it
a
quick
glance
before
handing
it
back
to
me.
"You're
all
good,
be
safe
in
there."
I
thank
her
and
walk
in,
looking
for
Orpheus.
"Now,
that
wasn't
so
bad,
was
it?"
He
says
to
me
as
he
smacks
my
back.
He
seems
to
be
in
much
higher
spirits
compared
to
an
hour
ago.
The
rest
of
the
day
flew
by
and
by
that
time
the
adventurers
went
to
their
quarters.
Orpheus
acted
like
he
was
drunk
so
they
would
tell
us
where
we
slept
without
sounding
like
we
didn't
know
anything.
We
get
to
a
room
and
there’s
a
bunk
bed,
with
a
little
chair
across
from
it.
"This
is
perfect.
''he
says
happily.
"What
are
we
going
to
do
tomorrow?"
I
ask
him.
"Since
the
expedition
is
Tomorrow
in
the
afternoon,
I'm
assuming
they'll
be
hosting
some
practice
rounds
early
in
the
morning."
He
answers
quickly.
"You
wanna
get
in
on
that?"
"I
mean,
I
wouldn't
want
to
cause
any
suspicion."
I
tell
him.
Orpheus
laughs
at
me.
"I
wouldn't
worry
about
it.
Goodnight
Cyrus."
he
quickly
replies.
"Goodnight
Orpheus."
I
just
can't
seem
to
understand
what
went
through
my
head.
I
hardly
considered
what
would
happen
if
I
accepted
his
proposal.
What
about
my
mom?
She's
probably
worrying
right
now.
What
about
Tristian
and
Roy?
I'm
sure
they
wouldn't
want
to
be
blamed
for
my
disappearance,
but
they
were
the
last
two
people
I
saw.
I'm
starting
to
get
worried
about
this.
"Orpheus,
how
long
do
you
think
this
will
last?"
no
reply.
"Orpheus?"
I
look
up
and
I
see
him
fast
asleep.
Great...
I
could
hardly
get
any
sleep
last
night.
I
was
too
busy
worrying
about
everyone
I
completely
abandoned
to
go
forth
on
this
adventure
with
a
kid
I
just
met.
He
slept
fine
though,
which
I
suppose
is
a
good
thing,
one
of
us
needs
to
be
well
rested.
Orpheus
was
right
about
what
he
said
last
night,
they’re
holding
practice
matches
to
improve
as
much
as
you
can
before
you
venture
off.
I
figured
this
would
be
the
best
chance
to
see
if
I
will
really
survive
this.
I
asked
a
random
member
to
spar
with
me.
"Sure
kid,
just
don't
cry
when
you
lose."
he
tells
me.
We
both
walk
into
the
ring,
and
he
draws
his
weapon.
Thankfully
he's
using
a
hammer,
so
I
can
most
likely
beat
him
in
speed.
"Are
you
ready?"
he
asks
me.
"Yes,"
I
said.
"Let's
begin.”
He
laughs
at
me.
"You
don’t
even
have
a
weapon!
This
is
hilarious!!”
He
starts
to
charge
at
me
with
his
decently
sized
hammer.
With
a
weapon
like
that,
I
can
definitely
dodge
whenever
he
swings
it
around.
He
winds
up
a
swing
and
I
quickly
prepare
to
maneuver
around
him,
but
he
starts
to
spark
up.
Is
he
using
lightning
magic
to
speed
himself
up?
I
jump
back
in
fear.
“You
gonna
cast
some
magic
or
something?”
I
chuckle
at
him.
“Maybe
I
will…
I
turn
around
and
see
some
swords
in
a
barrel.
I
grab
one
and
turn
back.
I
have
a
good
understanding
of
how
he
attacks.
He
was
really
banking
on
me
not
realizing
he
was
using
magic
with
his
hammer,
but
I
noticed
right
away.
Such
a
shame
too,
a
surprise
attack
like
that
might’ve
worked
on
me
if
he
didn’t
immediately
use
it.
I
charge
at
him
and
when
he
swings
his
hammer,
I
clash
it
with
my
sword,
breaking
his
hammer
into
pieces.
He
falls
to
the
ground
in
shock.
“H-How
did
you
do
that?”
I
stand
there
a
little
confused.
Did
he
not
apply
any
mana
to
his
hammer?
He
should’ve…
I
did
it
on
instinct.
I
point
my
sword
to
his
face.
“Study
magic
more,
you
have
a
powerful
innate
magic.
I
walk
away
looking
for
Orpheus.
"There
you
are!
I
was
looking
for
you!
What
have
you
been
up
to?"
He
said
when
I
found
him.
“I
had
a
practice
match
and…
it
went
better
than
I
thought."
"I
see,
well
I
assumed
you
would
defeat
some
of
the
people
here,
you're
really
talented."
"I
suppose
so,
I
truly
think
the
majority
of
people
here
are
just
mediocre
enough
for
me
to
seem
more
than
simply
adequate.
I
mean
really,
there
are
kids
who
can
put
a
little
mana
in
a
sword
and
make
it
stronger.
He
just
had
no
idea
I
even
did
that.
I
bet
he
has
no
idea
how
to
make
a
barrier.
I
don't
even
think
he
can
sense
mana."
Orpheus
looks
at
me
oddly
while
I’m
ranting
“No
matter,
I'm
still
impressed
by
your
skill."
He
says
to
stop
me
from
talking.
Some
more
time
passed,
and
we
were
asked
to
go
to
the
dining
hall.
On
the
stage
was
an
older
looking
man
waiting
for
everyone
to
sit
down.
"Ladies
and
gentlemen,
I
ask
you
to
sign
your
name
on
this
sheet
of
paper
if
you
wish
to
go
on
the
next
venture
to
Castle
Drayton.
If
you
do
not
wish
to,
know
that
you
do
not
have
to
sign
up
for
it
if
you
don't
want
to.
Once
you’ve
signed,
eat
some
breakfast
and
walk
into
the
room
down
this
hallway.”
he
says
as
he
points
to
the
hallway
to
his
right.
“Thank
you
for
your
time."
He
steps
down
the
stairs
and
begins
talking
to
another
older
man.
"Come
with
me
Cyrus,
We'll
be
putting
our
fake
names
on
that
paper."
Orpheus
whispers.
I
started
to
follow
him
up
to
the
stage.
I
take
a
look
at
my
identification
card
and
see
the
name
on
it.
“Glenn
Waters.”
I
said
out
loud.
“Yup.”
Orpheus
replies.
“I’m
your
older
brother
Matthew.”
"Alright,
thank
you."
I
walk
into
the
line
with
Orpheus
and
start
to
wait.
time
passes
by
and
the
line
seems
to
not
get
any
smaller.
"Damn,
there
are
a
lot
of
people
joining
this
isn't
there?"
I
said
to
Orpheus.
"Yeah"
he
said
blankly.
"It's
sad."
I'm
not
too
sure
what
he
means,
but
I
can
feel
something.
It's
very
visceral.
Eventually,
It's
finally
Orpheus'
turn
and
soon
mine.
As
Orpheus
walks
away,
I
walk
to
the
paper
and
sign
it
quickly.
The
old
man,
who
was
talking
to
the
other
old
man,
looked
at
me
for
a
solid
minute.
"Interesting"
he
says
out
loud.
As
I
start
to
walk
away,
the
old
man
stops
me.
"Good
evening
young
man,
what
are
you
doing
here?"
I
look
at
him
in
his
eyes,
they
look
very
cold.
"My
name
is
Glenn,
I'm
here
to
help
my
brother
at
Castle
Drayton."
He
nods.
"I
see."
He
says
flatly.
"I
hope
to
see
you
again
young
man,
be
safe
out
there."
"Thank
you,
sir."
I
quickly
ran
back
to
Orpheus
as
soon
as
the
conversation
ended.
"What
did
that
man
ask
you?"
Orpheus
asks
me.
"He
asked
me
who
I
was
and
why
I
was
here,
but
I
think
I
answered
him
well
enough
though."
Orpheus
calms
down.
"Alright,
good.
Now
come
on,
let's
go."
"I
agree."
I
say
quickly.
In
no
time
at
all
we
walked
to
the
room.
Within
no
time
the
rest
of
the
adventurers
quickly
ate
breakfast
and
gathered
in
a
new
room,
one
with
a
giant
crystal
in
the
middle
of
the
room.
"Today
you
will
all
be
traveling
to
Castle
Drayton.
I
wish
you
all
the
best
of
luck.
All
of
you
are
exceptional
Travelers
who
will
do
incredible
things.
Good
luck
everyone."
I
look
at
Orpheus
and
he
smiles.
"You're
about
to
see
something
beautiful."
I
look
at
him
oddly.
What
does
he
mean
by
that?
As
soon
as
he
said
that,
the
giant
crystal
started
to
illuminate
the
whole
room
in
a
blue
light.
and
starts
to
produce
a
lot
of
visible
mana.
"This
is
a
warp
gate."
Orpheus
says
in
excitement.
I
wish
I
could
exude
that
same
level
of
excitement,
but
I’m
really
worried…
