My thighs and calves burned with exhaustion. My body begged me to stop, but I refused. The moment I grabbed this little girl&#x2019;s hand, I had taken responsibility for her life. I had to save her.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;&#x3C;p&#x3E;Hand in hand, I led her away from the pursing Noise. When she lagged behind, I pulled her forward. When she cried in fear, I reassured her. When she collapsed from exhaustion, I carried her on my back.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;&#x3C;p&#x3E;We struggled to escape. We struggled to survive.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;&#x3C;p&#x3E;And as the setting sun dyed the sky in an ominous orange, we found ourselves in an industrial park. Miles of metal pipes snaked through the compound, connect the concrete buildings. Large silos and towers littered the enclosed complex.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;&#x3C;p&#x3E;With the doors on ground level locked, our only option was up. I found a maintenance ladder leading up to a roof. With the girl&#x2019;s arms warped securely around my neck, I climbed. At the top, we collapsed on our backs, panting heavily, trying to fill our lungs with oxygen.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x201C;Are we gonna die?&#x201D; the young girl cried between gasps.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;&#x3C;p&#x3E;Her tears and fearful expression reminded me of the concert two years. The crowd was in chaos as the Noise attacked. Their screams as they disintegrated rang in my ears and froze me in place. I would have died, if not for Amou Kanade. I was absolutely certain that she saved my life that day. She saved me by singing a gentle, yet powerful song with a kind, confident smile on her face.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;&#x3C;p&#x3E;I hoped I was able to convey the same confidence as I reassured the girl with a smile and a gentle shake of my head.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;&#x3C;p&#x3E;But then I heard it. A sound akin to vibrating plastic film. The sound of Noise.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;&#x3C;p&#x3E;At the far end of the building, the ephemeral monsters clambered onto the roof. The humanoid Noise approached with their appendages aimed at us while the globule Noise inched towards us like slugs.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;&#x3C;p&#x3E;I held the trembling girl in my arms as we were pushed to the edge of the roof. Going down the ladder would be too slow. And a drop from this height would break my legs at best. My heart was beating out of control as terror and helplessness gripped me. But&#x2026; there had to be something I could do!&#x3C;/p&#x3E;&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x201C;Don&#x2019;t give up living!&#x201D; I repeated Kanade&#x2019;s words aloud. I wasn&#x27;t sure if I was trying to reassure the girl or myself.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;&#x3C;p&#x3E;From the depths of my heart and mind, a melody clawed its way into my consciousness. An unfamiliar song in a language I did not recognize. But my instincts told me to sing. And so, I listened.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;&#x3C;p&#x3E;A ball of light formed on my chest and exploded towards. A warmth gathered and spread to my extremities, flooding my body with heat. Something was changing within me. It was as if every cell of my body was vibrating at a resonant frequency. The heat and pressure soon became painful enough to elicit a scream.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;&#x3C;p&#x3E;The agony brought me down on all fours. I could barely keep myself from fainting. Then, mechanical tendrils burst from my back and wrapped around body. They coalesced into a radiant set of orange and white armor. My school uniform was replaced with a bodysuit that hugged my body. Mechanical gauntlets and greaves locked into place around my limbs with a hiss of pneumatic gas.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;&#x3C;p&#x3E;The pain had faded but adrenaline still flowed through my veins. I stood and faced the horde of Noise. My fingers curled into a fist.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;&#x3C;p&#x3E;I didn&#x2019;t know what had happened, but I felt power resonating through me. I was no longer weak or helpless. I could fight. I could save the little girl. With the realization, a savage smile bloomed on my face.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
