It’d be a waste!” I shouted back. &lt;br&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;I’d managed pull out of the dive and return to cruising altitude. My wingmen, Kroeger and Weber, were able to join to us. Together, three of us and our radio operators watched as the remaining twenty-eight Dauntlesses descended upon the Japanese carrier. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;Enormous spouts of water erupted on the port and starboard sides of the ship as the pilots dropped their payloads. But the sprays of white, ocean foam meant misses.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;“Come’on,” I mutter under my breath. “Come’on. Just one solid hit.”&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;In the midst of the white geysers, a black and orange flower of fire and smoke bloomed. Then, another, and another, and one more. Four solid hits on the deck of the carrier. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;Maury cheered at the four explosions. I took a deep breath, filling my lungs with the scent of oil and exhaust. I readjusted my grip on the joystick. Then, peaking through the canopy of the cockpit, I found my new target: a second carrier, the size of thumbtack, just under us.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;“Don’t get cocky. Now, it’s our turn.” &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;I pushed the joystick forward. My Dauntless responded, rolling into a near-vertical dive. The world reoriented itself as the ocean surface moved up to replace the horizon. There was that familiar, yet still eerie weightlessness as we plummeted from the heavens.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;I pulled the diving flaps lever, causing the ailerons on my wings to fan out. My seat straps caught me as our speed reduced. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Kroeger and Weber do the same. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;“Okay, Maury,” I commanded, “We put that carrier out of action even if we have to crash on her deck!”&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;He responded with an altimeter reading, “Four thousand feet!” &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;The Japs below had noticed us. They greeted our planes with a hail of lead. Trails of white, hot tracers streamed skyward from the carriers and the surrounding ships below. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;“Three thousand!” &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;The carrier was the size of a shoe now. I clearly see the parked planes, preparing for takeoff. The sailors, were tiny dots, scrambling like ants all over her deck. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&lt;i&gt;Kunck! Kunck!&lt;/i&gt; &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;Kroeger and Weber had released their bombs. They pulled out of their dives, swerving to avoid the anti-aircraft fire. But…&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&lt;i&gt;Still too high. I have to get closer.&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;“Two thousand!”&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&lt;i&gt;Closer.&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;“Eighteen hundred!” Maury switched to increments of two hundred. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;The barrels of the AA guns flashed nonstop. They chased my plane, desperately trying to knock me out of the sky. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;“Sixteen hundred!”&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;I could make out the landing strip markers on the carrier deck.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;“Fourteen hundred!”&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;I could see the Jap flags painted on the wings of the parked aircraft.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&lt;i&gt;Kunck!&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;I finally released the ordnance. The Dauntless lurched as the thousand-pound explosive separated from the fuselage.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; I immediately pulled out of the dive. The plane shook and groaned in protest as it fought to break free from momentum and gravity. We were much too low. I could smell the salty ocean spray as we leveled out over the ocean’s surface. Behind me, I heard three explosions in quick succession. Two, watery splashes, followed by a loud, rumbling roar.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;“That was a beauty, sir,” Maury whistled in admiration. “Right on her deck!”&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;I glanced back and caught a glimpse of the blooming cloud of fire. As I wove through the stream of the anti-aircraft fire to escape, the feeling of satisfaction bloomed on my face in a wide, cocky grin. &lt;br&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp;&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
