Inspiration, My First Hero
As
I
reach
the
end
of
this
journal,
I
realised
I’ve
only
lightly
talked
about
my
journey
into
the
world
of
hunting.
And,
today
is
a
very
personal
day
as
well.
So,
I
decided
to
dedicate
this
entry
to
something
I
haven’t
talked
about
in
years.
My
late
father,
James
Collins,
my
first
hero.
James
Collins
grew
up
in
poverty,
his
family
moved
from
a
small
Scottish
village
to
the
big
city
of
Brittain.
Hoping
to
build
a
new
life,
one
more
free
and
give
opportunities
for
their
son.
I
never
met
my
grandparents,
but
my
father
told
me
much
about
them.
When
they
moved
here,
he
was
drawn
to
the
libraries
and
historical
stories
contained
within.
My
father
was
an
eccentric
and
passionate
history
buff.
He
worked
hard
and
became
a
history
professor
at
the
college
he
studied.
It
was
there,
that
he
met
my
mother,
a
new
language
teacher
from
Spain.
The
way
he
explained
it,
“it
was
immediate
love
at
first
sight”
and
later
that
year
they’d
marry.
When
I
was
a
young
boy,
our
bonding
moments
were
spent
in
museums
and
lecture
halls.
My
eccentric
and
excitable
father
showed
me
the
wonders
of
history.
Most
of
it
didn’t
appeal
to
me,
but
I
enjoyed
seeing
my
old
man
excited.
Though,
one
story
did
catch
my
attention.
A
story
about
our
ancestor,
John
Henry
Patterson,
a
man
who
had
a
conflict
with
animals,
which
from
their
perspective
had
an
almost
supernatural
level
of
cunning.
It
fascinated
me
and
got
me
interested
in
the
world
of
hunting.
By
the
time
I
was
eight,
I
was
hooked,
but
tragedy
would
strike
soon
after.
While
on
his
evening
commute,
he
was
struck
by
a
drunk
driver
and
was
killed.
After
he
died,
I
found
out
about
Arthur
Wulfe,
a
man
who
reminded
me
of
the
story
I’d
heard.
Getting
to
hunt
alongside
him
in
some
of
the
most
beautiful
countries
in
the
world
was
a
dream
come
true.
A
dream,
that
ended
in
tragedy
when
he
was
killed.
I’ll
admit,
it
felt
like
losing
another
father,
he
was
a
man
that
inspired
me
as
much
as
my
own
father.
I
dedicate
this
to
you,
James
Collins.
Happy
birthday,
Dad,
I
wish
you
could
see
what
I
have
built.
