Kpop Demon Hunters took the anime world by storm. Courageously mixing the Kpop and anime worlds and being successful with it, Sony and Netflix struck gold with this new IP that they dropped seemingly out of nowhere. Now, thanks to the success of the first film, a sequel is now on the works. Here’s everything you need to know about the Kpop Demon Hunters sequel.
As the most watched original movie on Netflix, it’s no surprise that Netflix would greenlight a sequel to Kpop Demon Hunters. Who wouldn’t want to replicate that success and have another go around? But there’s a slight hitch: Sony actually already sold the rights to Kpop Demon Hunters to Netflix, which is how the movie was turned into a Netflix Original even if it was Sony who produced the film. So, theoretically, a sequel wouldn’t need the involvement of Sony anymore.
However, Netflix still needs Sony. The distinct animation style of Kpop Demon Hunters which it shares with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, is proprietary and owned by Sony Pictures Animation. Part of the success of Kpop Demon Hunters was its animation, so Netflix will risk losing out if it goes for a different style for the sequel. Thus, even if Sony’s already sold the rights to Netflix, Netflix will still need Sony to animate the sequel.
What we know so far is that Netflix is already in the talks with directors Chris Appelhans and Maggie Kang about making the sequel, and Netflix is already in negotiations with Sony regarding it, as per The Hollywood Reporter. So, the sequel might be an inevitability that is coming out sooner or later - we’re just going to have to wait until the media giants complete a deal.
As for the story that the sequel will potentially tackle, Director Kang has this to say: (ht to Variety)
“We’ve set up so much for potential backstory. Obviously, there’s a lot of questions that are left unanswered and areas that are not explored, and we had to do that because there’s only so much movie you could tell in 85 minutes,” Kang said. “This was Rumi’s story, and we have backstories for Zoey and Mira – ones that we actually put in the movie, but it just kind of rejected it. It just wasn’t the movie for those stories.”
Even though Kpop Demon Hunters told a self-contained story, there is still a lot of things that writers could explore in its world. The movie left a lot of open-ended scenarios that definitely can pique the interest of fans worldwide, and there are still a lot of questions that could be answered about HUNTR/X, their pasts, and the other members of Saja Boys, for example.
One thing’s for sure, though: we’re getting more HUNTR/X in the sequel, no matter where the story brings us next.
Speaking of alternate scenarios that fans love exploring, FableVerse has a couple of whimsical “What If” scenarios involving HUNTR/X. Voyceme has produced Kpop Demon Hunters Fables such as “Huntrix: The Rebel Stage,” which is a Hunger Games crossover AU; “K-Pop Demon Slayer — The Demon Harmony Curse,” a Demon Slayer crossover AU; and “Hogwarts K-Pop Infiltration,” - you guessed it, a Harry Potter crossover AU.
But what if you want to step in the shoes of HUNTR/X and sustain the Honmoon yourself? Then step into the “KPOP Idols vs Demons-7 Days to Chaos!” Fable and start your training as a Demon Hunter Kpop Idol under Bang PD himself. All of these scenarios are free to play at Voyce.me.
We don’t know yet when the Kpop Demon Hunters sequel will come out, but we definitely can have a good time waiting with these Fables to play. Explore them now and immerse yourself in the world of Kpop Demon Hunters, and be ready when Rumi, Zoey, and Mira return to the stage sometime in the future.
